Kitchen Ducts
A critical part of a kitchen’s ventilation system for range hoods includes the necessary ducts that ventilate captured smoke, odors, humidity and heat from the stove/ range hood before they dissipate into the rest of the a house or apartment.
Likewise, all components of a commercial kitchen’s ventilation system must function together so the whole system contributes to controlling temperature, humidity, and airflow helping improve the indoor air quality and minimizing possible dangers or risks to both employees and customers.
For residential home/ apartments, the preferable way to vent a stove is by a duct to an exterior wall or roof vent. Ductless stove hood models are the next best option when you’re not able to connect the range hood via ducts to the outside. Often times a ductless stove hood model is the only option many apartment dwellers have if they want to install a range hood.

Considerations Venting A Range Hood
The three most important features most people consider when shopping for a range hood are: style, width and cubic feet per minute (CFM) of the hood. For many consumers the duct size and configuration of the range hood is often overlooked. The downside of not taking into consideration the duct size is ending up with ductwork that is too small for the hood’s CMF resulting in the range hood exhaust system not functioning at maximum efficiency.
Many professionals follow these guidelines when considering the size of the range hood’s ducting requirements.
· 0-400 CFM: minimum duct size of 4”, recommended duct size of 6”
· 401-600 CFM: minimum duct size of 6”, recommended duct size of 8”
· 601-900 CFM: minimum duct size of 7”, recommended duct size of 8”-10”
· 901-1200 CFM: minimum duct size of 8”, recommended duct size of 10”-12”
· 1200+ CFM: minimum 10” diameter duct, recommended duct size of 12”
If the ductwork is even just an inch or two smaller than the recommended guidelines above, you will notice a decrease in the performance of the hood.
The shorter the duct run to the exterior roof or wall, the better when ventilation with a range hood. If you need to run duct work longer than 30’ there will be a decrease in the efficiency of the hood’s exhaust fan. Professionals recommend that if you add elbows to the ducting, you need to reduce the all over length between 5-10 feet per elbow. The fewer elbows, the better since every time the duct changes direction it adds resistance and additional pressure to the air exiting the kitchen. On other point to remember is: DO NOT vent into a crawl space or attic.
What Type of Duct Is Best for Venting A Range Hood?
Rigid duct is the ideal duct for range hoods. It is the most durable and efficient option. Rigid duct fulfills requirements proposed by the IRC (International Residential Code) for range hood ductwork. Rigid ducts have a smooth inner surface and come in stainless or galvanized steel and aluminum.
The International Residential Code (2015) Section M1503 requires that ducts servicing a range hood be airtight, fitted with a backdraft damper, and have smooth inner surfaces. Before installing a range hood duct system, check your local building codes to make sure you remain within the requirements.
SNAP-LOCK PIPES
Lambro offers both aluminum and galvanized steel rigid snap-lock pipes.
The ducts have a continuous airtight lock-seam and is totally non-combustible with a maximum operating temperature of 400°F.
· Galvanized steel and aluminum Snap-lock pipes are available in 24” lengths with 6”, 7”, or 8” diameters.
· Galvanized steel and aluminum Snap-lock pipes are available in 60” lengths in only a 6” diameter.
· All have One crimped end
· Product pages for Snap-lock pipes have both spec sheets and installation instructions.

Because air systems with round ducts have less air resistance, they are often preferred over rectangular duct systems.
Range hood ducts must be isolated from all other exhaust systems including exhaust systems for the bathroom and a clothes dryer.
Flexible Semi-Rigid Aluminum Duct
Semi-rigid aluminum duct is another choice for range hood venting. It is flexible enough for ease of installation, yet holds its shape without sagging. It has smaller ridges inside for better air flow than regular flexible ducting, which is NOT suitable for kitchen range hood venting. Check any local building codes carefully to make sure flexible semi rigid aluminum ducting is allowed. In some areas it is a common code violation when used in a kitchen’s range hood exhaust system.
The IRC is a considered a model code that many U.S. states and counties base their own codes on. However, the final say on any building code matter will be those of your local state or city DOB (Department of Building). A call to your local building department should provide the answer as to whether you can use semi-rigid aluminum ducting for your range hood exhaust fan.
Lambro’s Flexible Semi-Rigid aluminum duct has a continuous airtight lock-seam and is totally non-combustible with a maximum operating temperature of 400°F.
Our semi-rigid aluminum ducts are available 6”, 7”, 8”, or 10” diameters in both 8’ & 25’ lengths.

OPTIONAL DUCTING ACCESSORIES
TRANSITION ACCESSORY
Transition ducts are made for both fan and hood installations allowing you to increase or reduce the size of a duct. Duct transitions are important because a duct that is too small for a range will reduce the efficiency of the range hood.
Lambro transitions are available in a several sizes and configurations to accommodate most rigid ducting requirements. These ducting accessories are made of aluminum or galvanized steel.
3 1/4″ X 10″ To 6″ Round – Aluminum Transition
3 1/4″ X 10″ To 6″ Round – Galvanized Transition
3 1/4″ X 10″ To 7″ Round – Aluminum Transition
3 1/4″ X 10″ To 7″ Round – Galvanized Transition
90 DEGREE ELBOW ACCESSORY
Lambro offers adjustable elbows in both galvanized steel and aluminum with 6”, 7”, or 8” diameters. Product pages for adjustable elbows have both spec sheets and installation instructions.
Each elbow added to a duct system increases resistance making it harder for captured cooking air to be vented to the outside. Professionals recommend adding no more than two elbows for the entire length of the venting run.

3 1/4″ X 10″ RIGID DUCT, EXTENSION & ELBOW ACCESSORIES
Our 5” extension for 1/4″ X 10″ aluminum wall caps is used to transition to a 3.25 in. x 10 in. stack duct. It installs easily with sheet-metal screws.
In addition, Lambro offers 3 1/4″ X 10″ rigid ductwork & elbows in both 24 gauge aluminum and in galvanized steel.

KITCHEN DUCT KITS
The best range hood ventilation option in the kitchen is to vent vertically since hot air rises upward. Vertical venting will help move the air out faster. However, this is not required and, in some cases, impossible. The next best choice is venting through a side wall.
Lambro offers two different vent kits for a kitchen exhaust system. Kits are a convenient way to have all the necessary parts that are required for a consumer or contractor to easily install a venting system for a kitchen exhaust fan or the exhaust of a kitchen range hood.
· Can be used to vent over-the-range microwaves
· Kit connects to 7” round or 3 ¼” x 10” exhaust outlets
· Opening/closing flaps prevents outside elements from entering the vent
· UV inhibitor is used to help prevent the premature fading of vent
· Pack Quantity: 1 | Package Type: Retail Carton
· For Shingle Roof Installations Only
· Can be used to vent over-the-range microwaves
· Kit connects to 7” round or 3 ¼” x 10” exhaust outlets
· Opening/closing damper prevents outside elements from entering the vent
· Screen prevents birds from nesting inside of vent
· Designed to prevent leaks with proper installation
· Pack Quantity: 1 | Package Type: Retail Carton
